Hazelnut (Corylus avellana)

Combines productivity with ecological value in small-scale systems.
Hazelnut is a compact, productive tree that fits beautifully into small-scale food forests and lifestyle block orchards. It produces delicious, nutrient-rich nuts, while also serving as an attractive and functional shelter or hedge species.
Thriving in cool, temperate climates, Hazelnut prefers fertile, well-drained soils and moderate shelter from strong winds. It can be pruned to shape, coppiced for rods or firewood, and used in mixed native-exotic shelter plantings.
For nut production, plant two or more varieties for cross-pollination. Beyond yield, Hazelnuts contribute to biodiversity, attract birds and beneficial insects, and blend seamlessly into regenerative and edible landscapes.
A strong partner for Alders and Tagasaste, Hazelnut benefits from nitrogen enrichment and creates a productive middle layer in multi-species systems.
