kānuka
Kunzea ericoides
Hardy • Fast Shelter • Coastal & Dry-Tolerant Native
Kānuka is one of Aotearoa’s toughest, fastest-establishing native trees — perfect for lifestyle blocks needing resilient shelter, erosion control, or hardy native structure. With its fine, soft foliage and upright form, Kānuka brings a lighter, more open texture to plantings while still providing excellent shelter and quick coverage. It thrives in poor, dry, sandy, or rocky soils and handles wind, frost, and semi-coastal environments with ease.
Naturally regenerative and long lived, Kānuka is fantastic for revegetation projects, boundary planting, dry slopes, and mixed native shelterbelts. It pairs beautifully with Tī Kōuka, Akeake, Pittosporum, and Flax, and creates a strong framework for long-term native habitat. Once established, it requires almost no maintenance, making it ideal for busy or remote properties.
If you want a low-fuss, high-resilience native that grows quickly and survives where other trees fail, Kānuka is one of the safest and most dependable options.

Planting & Care
Plant in full sun for best growth. Kānuka thrives in dry or exposed conditions once established but will appreciate watering during its first summer. Mulch to help retain moisture in poor soils. Avoid overwatering — this species naturally prefers dry, free-draining sites. Minimal care required beyond occasional trimming if you want a more controlled shape.
