sugar maple

Acer saccharum
Spectacular Autumn Colour • Hardy • Long-Lived Feature Tree
Sugar Maple is one of the most celebrated deciduous trees in the world, known for its breathtaking autumn display of oranges, reds, and golds. Strong, upright, and long-lived, it brings classic seasonal beauty to lifestyle blocks and large gardens, offering shade in summer, brilliant colour in autumn, and a clean winter silhouette. Despite its northern origins, Sugar Maple adapts well to many NZ conditions, thriving in cooler areas, clay soils, and inland sites.
This species is an excellent choice for anyone wanting a standout feature tree with real presence. It grows into a broad, handsome canopy, making it ideal for driveways, paddock edges, outdoor living areas, and mixed deciduous plantings. Once established, Sugar Maple is hardy, relatively low maintenance, and tolerant of wind and moderate drought. In the right climate, it can also be tapped for small-scale home maple syrup production. If you want a spectacular, long-lived tree with four-season appeal, Sugar Maple is one of the finest deciduous options available.

Planting & Care
Plant Sugar Maple in full sun for best autumn colour. Mulch well in its first years, especially in clay-heavy soils or summer-dry areas. Water through its establishment period but avoid waterlogging. Prune lightly in winter only if shaping is required — maples bleed sap if pruned in spring. Protect young trees from stock and strong winds until well established.
